How I found out about Fogo Azul: literally, on February 1, 2017 my friend Jill randomly texted me, “Hi long time was wondering if you had any interest in joining a female marching band.”
No seriously I looked up our text history and that’s literally what she wrote.

Previous experience in percussion: 0.

Previous experience in percussion: 0.

Previous experience in marching bands, female or otherwise: 0.

First Fogo Azul rehearsal: Saturday, February 4, 2017.

First Gig: Sunday, February 5, 2017 (Chinese New Year Parade NYC).

You do the math.

Why I joined: To get out of the house more often (no, seriously!).

First drum and why: Surdo 2! Big huge kickass drum! Easy to play, relax, and get into the groove! No pressure because Surdo 1 usually leads off!

Second drum and why: Surdo 1 (easy to pick up after Surdo 2, and for some reason one time we needed an extra Surdo 1).

Third drum: Dobra. Because why not?

Fourth drum (in progress): Timbal. Seriously, why not?
Maybe some day: Repinique and Snare. Because the rhythms are already burned into my head.

Favorite Fogo Azul song: omg that’s like how?

Best Fogo Azul moment: every time we get together is the best day of my whole entire life! No, seriously! That includes the time last summer that we all showed up for rehearsal on East 20th Street and spent an hour figuring out that we were supposed to be on West 19th Street.

Advice for anyone interested in joining: If you are looking for a way to get out of the house more often, do this. No experience necessary. Also you will meet a lot of really great new friends all at once, learn new things all the time, and see New York City like you’ve never seen it before.

Pets: Four cats. Their names are Minnie, Eloise, Loki and Thor. They outnumber my children two-to-one. However my children are in their 20’s and they don’t need a litter box so there’s that.

What I do for work: I’m the Deputy Director of Public Information for my  home county, Union County. No, seriously! I mostly write press releases, social media and web content, and I manage a grant program for community gardens. No, seriously!

Also what I do for work: freelance reporting on clean tech and the nexus of energy and politics for CleanTechnica.com and TriplePundit.com among others.

What I do for fun (aside from getting together with all my new best friends every chance I get): eat.
