Why did you decide to join Fogo Azul? What was the catalyst?

I had attended the 2018 Women's March in Manhattan. Saw and heard Fogo Azul for the first time and was completely blown away. Saw there were people in the group who appeared older than me and learned that I didn't need drumming experience. Two days later I applied to join.

Did you have drumming or musical experience before joining Fogo? If so, what?

Music major in college.

As a drummer/musician, what do you enjoy about being in this drumline?

The music and the love we all share for it, regardless of our background.

Outside of drumming, what you do enjoy about being a part of this community?

Friendships and learning about different lives.

What do you enjoy most about the drum you play?

Hard to describe.

What attracted you to drumming?

I've always liked the rhythms and syncopations of percussive groups.

What are your top 2-3 favorite Fogo performances you’ve played in?

Hard to choose.

What has been the most interesting place you’ve been to because of Fogo?

Too many to name.

What -if anything, surprises you about your experience in playing with Fogo?

That I can do it and that people are supportive.

How has drumming with Fogo Azul benefitted you or enhanced your life?

One of the best decisions I ever made in my life was to join Fogo Azul.

What do your friends and/or family think or say about you drumming with Fogo?

They are glad I am part of something that makes me happy. My husband is very supportive of my experience in Fogo Azul.

What have you learned about yourself being in this drumline?

At a later part of my life I can still be in something as exciting and as grand as Fogo Azul.

What would you tell someone who is thinking of joining? Why should they join?

The music and people are wonderful and supportive. There are people there at all ages from all walks of life. You don't need experience, you will be taught, and when you do play, you feel like you're flying.
