Folks of Fogo: Selma

Drum: Surdo, Repique

Pronouns: She/Her

Borough/City: Bronx

How long have you been a member of Fogo?

Since January 2018

When is the first time you heard or saw Fogo Azul?

Saw Fogo at the Women's March in 2018. Looked it up and the words "all women drum line of protest and resistance" drew me in immediately.

Why did you decide to join Fogo Azul? What was the catalyst?

When I heard the drumming, I felt I was back home in Tanzania, Africa. Hearing the sound, seeing the power, the smiling women, jumping and hitting hard (Joan being one!) It was also nice to see strong "older" women having fun! I was living alone, divorced with two kids in college! I knew I had to join.

Did you have drumming or musical experience before joining Fogo? If so, what?

My musical experiences comprised of an amazing repertoire of nursery rhymes. Emailed the band and was told by our chief "no experience necessary, come on Tuesday"

As a drummer/musician, what do you enjoy about being in this drumline?

I love learning, I enjoy THIS community and I love the experiences we have had together.

What do you enjoy most about the drum you play?

I loved the power of the Surdo (played for 5 years) and I love the challenge and easy commute of the repique !

What attracted you to drumming?

After hearing Fogo I knew I wanted to be part of this magic.. When I looked up Fogo Azul the description had me -"a drum line of protest and resistance". I have had no regrets!

What are your top 2-3 favorite Fogo performances you’ve played in?

Hard one! Maybe Dyke March, NYC marathon, playing for US soccer women’s world cup and any event that has a nice spread of food as well.

What has been the most interesting place you’ve been to because of Fogo?

Brazil, Spain, Bermuda (Ist pride EVER when we played), Atlantic City, Buffalo, Long Island. Too many to count.

How has drumming with Fogo Azul benefitted you or enhanced your life?

Fogo Azul has been one of the best things in my life. After a very difficult loss in 2013, I was just existing. Fogo Azul gave me so much....my wife and soul mate (sorry to all the ladies who are still crushing on her!!!), a new skill that I am still learning, a community that is beyond anything I could imagine being part of, and introducing Fogo to my kids and their friends (all young adults) who say that the women the meet in Fogo are inspirational. One person who travelled with us to Brazil told me recently that her trip with us in 2023 "changed her whole life" as she pursues her nursing degree. Stacy -our director has no idea the impact on the young adults who are affected.

What have you learned about yourself being in this drumline?

I have learned that I am stronger than I thought I was and am grateful beyond words to be part of this amazing community created by a single person who had a vision.

What other hobbies or creative outlets do you have in your life?

Reading, meditation and community activism.

What would you tell someone who is thinking of joining? Why should they join?

Not to be dramatic but joining Fogo can be life changing if you leave yourself open! Grateful beyond words for this group!.
